BCIT BCGEU Faculty Collective Agreement: An Overview

The British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) and the British Columbia Government and Service Employees` Union (BCGEU) have signed a new collective agreement for the BCIT BCGEU faculty. This agreement is effective from April 1, 2019, to March 31, 2022, and covers a wide range of employment-related issues.

Under this agreement, the BCGEU is the exclusive bargaining agent for the BCIT employees in the Faculty and Instructor group. The collective agreement covers terms and conditions of employment, salaries, benefits, leave, and more. Here`s a closer look at some of the key highlights of this agreement.

Salary scales for the BCIT BCGEU faculty will increase by 2% per year for three years. For example, a faculty member with a Master`s degree and six years of experience will see their salary increase from $70,056 to $72,256 in the first year of the agreement.

The collective agreement provides for a comprehensive benefits package for BCIT BCGEU faculty members, which includes medical, dental, vision, and extended health care benefits. The plan is designed to provide coverage for a range of services, including prescription drugs, physiotherapy, and chiropractic services.

In addition, the agreement provides for enhanced coverage for dependents, including children up to the age of 21 or 25 if they are full-time students. Faculty members with dependents who have disabilities will also be eligible for extended coverage.

The collective agreement provides for a range of leave entitlements, including sick leave, bereavement leave, and compassionate care leave. Faculty members are entitled to up to 15 days of sick leave per year, which can be accumulated to a maximum of 100 days.

Bereavement leave is granted for up to five working days in the event of the death of a family member, while compassionate care leave is granted for up to 27 weeks to provide care to a critically ill family member.

The BCIT BCGEU faculty collective agreement provides a fair and competitive compensation package for faculty members at BCIT. This agreement also provides for comprehensive benefits and leave entitlements, which will help ensure that faculty members are well-supported and able to provide quality education to BCIT students.

As an institution committed to academic excellence, BCIT recognizes the vital role of its faculty members in delivering a high-quality education. By signing this collective agreement, BCIT and the BCGEU have reaffirmed their commitment to supporting faculty members and ensuring that they have the resources and support they need to succeed.
